Google is pushing smartphone connectivity to new frontiers with the launch of the Pixel 10 series, making it the first set of smartphones to support WhatsApp audio and video calls via satellite. Unlike previous phones where satellite use was limited to emergency SOS or location sharing, the Pixel 10 takes a bold step by enabling everyday communication without mobile networks or Wi-Fi. The feature officially goes live on August 28, coinciding with the shipping date of the new phones.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Google demonstrated a Pixel 10 receiving a WhatsApp call while a satellite icon appeared in the status bar. The demo confirmed that users will be able to make and receive WhatsApp calls — both audio and video — even in remote areas without network coverage. This marks a significant evolution in satellite-powered mobile technology, making it useful not only in emergencies but also in everyday communication.
The addition of WhatsApp calling comes shortly after Google expanded other satellite-based features on the Pixel 10 lineup. Google Maps and Find My Hub now support live location sharing via satellite, while Satellite SOS is already available for emergency situations. Together, these updates show Google’s strategy to make the Pixel 10 a leader in next-generation satellite connectivity.
By enabling WhatsApp satellite calling, Google gives the Pixel 10 a decisive advantage over competitors. Apple’s iPhones still restrict satellite connectivity to SOS alerts, while Samsung’s Galaxy S25 only allows basic text messaging through Snapdragon Satellite. The Pixel 10, however, turns satellite into a practical communication tool, extending its usefulness far beyond emergencies.
While the development is groundbreaking, Google has confirmed some limitations. Only select carriers will support WhatsApp satellite calling at launch, and users may incur additional charges depending on their service provider. Moreover, it remains unclear if WhatsApp will eventually expand satellite functionality to text messaging alongside calls.
In addition to the Pixel 10 series, Google also introduced satellite connectivity on the Pixel Watch 4 LTE. Powered by the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2, the smartwatch can directly connect to a geostationary satellite network to summon help during emergencies. This makes it the first wearable to gain direct satellite access, extending Google’s satellite-first approach to its broader ecosystem.
