TikTok is currently testing 60-minute video uploads in a bid to compete more directly with YouTube. This feature is being trialed with a limited group of users in select markets, the company confirmed to TechCrunch.
While there are no immediate plans for a wider rollout, the intent is clear: by offering longer-form content, TikTok aims to attract YouTube viewers in addition to its existing audience, who are typically looking for short-form videos.
Initially, TikTok had a 15-minute upload limit, similar to YouTube's early days. However, this limit has gradually increased over the years. TikTok notes that creators frequently request more time for content such as cooking demonstrations, beauty tutorials, educational lessons, and comedic sketches. The new 60-minute limit responds to these demands.
The extended time limit is intended to provide creators with the opportunity to explore new or expanded content formats that would be impractical to view in multiple shorter segments.
This update also allows for the possibility of posting full episodes of TV shows on TikTok. For example, last year, Peacock made the first episode of a show available on TikTok, but it had to be divided into five parts. With the new 60-minute limit, such content can now be viewed in a single, uninterrupted video.
Additionally, TikTok has been testing a horizontal full-screen mode with video-scrubbing thumbnails, further aligning its platform with YouTube's viewing experience.
