In a surprising move, Instagram has decided to remove end-to-end encryption (E2EE) from its messaging platform. Until recently, Meta-owned apps, including WhatsApp and Instagram, were actively promoting E2EE as a core feature to ensure private communication. However, Instagram is now reversing this direction. Instead of issuing a formal press release, the company quietly updated its help section, announcing that E2EE will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.
End-to-end encryption ensures that only you and the person you're communicating with can access the contents of your messages and calls. No one else—not even Meta—can read or listen to the conversation.
Instagram has stated that after May 8, users whose chats are affected will receive instructions to download any media or messages they want to keep. Those using older versions of Instagram may need to update the app to access and save their affected chats.
Even though E2EE is being removed, some reporting or optional sharing features may still allow messages to be shared with Meta if users choose to do so.
E2EE relies on unique keys on every device involved in a conversation. When you send a message, your device locks it using these special keys. Only a device holding the corresponding key can unlock and read the message. This system also applies to video and audio calls.
No external party, including Meta, can access the content of your messages or calls. The only exception is if someone in the chat decides to share a message outside the conversation—then its contents could become visible to others.
The removal of E2EE on Instagram signals a major shift in how Meta handles user privacy. For years, encryption has been considered a key safeguard against hacking, surveillance, and unauthorized access. With this change, users may have to reconsider how they communicate sensitive information on the platform.
While Meta has not publicly explained the reasons behind this decision, it appears aimed at improving moderation, compliance, or other internal policies.
