Samsung has announced a new travel-focused initiative through a partnership with Turkish Airlines, introducing the Smart Tagged Baggage Service. Designed to make air travel smoother and less stressful, this service leverages Samsung’s SmartThings Find platform to help passengers track lost or delayed luggage with greater accuracy. By integrating Samsung’s location technology directly into Turkish Airlines’ customer support process, the partnership represents a significant step forward in modernizing baggage handling and recovery.
The service relies on passengers placing a Galaxy SmartTag inside their checked luggage. If the bag goes missing or arrives late, travelers can send Turkish Airlines a location-sharing link directly from SmartThings Find when filing a lost luggage report. This gives the airline access to real-time or last-known location data, improving search efficiency and reducing waiting time for passengers.
To further simplify the process of identifying misplaced luggage, SmartThings Find includes a Change Device Image feature. Passengers can upload an actual photo of their bag in the SmartThings app. This helps airline staff recognize the bag more quickly, especially in cases where luggage may look similar or lacks distinctive markings.
SmartThings Find uses a combination of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to pinpoint the location of Galaxy devices and SmartTags. These technologies allow for more accurate tracking in busy travel environments such as airports and cargo facilities.
The platform is powered by a crowdsourced network of over 700 million Galaxy devices worldwide. Each compatible device can help detect a SmartTag’s signal, contributing to one of the largest location-finding networks available today. This vast coverage improves the chances of locating bags even when they are moved across multiple airports or transit hubs.
Samsung has confirmed that it intends to expand the Smart Tagged Baggage Service to additional airlines in the near future. By integrating SmartThings Find into global airline operations, Samsung aims to address one of the most persistent travel challenges: lost luggage.
The partnership with Turkish Airlines serves as an early example of how smart devices and connected ecosystems can enhance traditional travel services. As the collaboration grows, passengers may soon benefit from a more reliable and technology-driven baggage tracking experience across more airlines and routes.
Samsung’s partnership with Turkish Airlines marks a notable advancement in using consumer technology to solve real-world travel problems. By combining SmartTag tracking, image-based identification, and the power of the SmartThings Find network, the Smart Tagged Baggage Service offers passengers greater peace of mind and faster resolution in the event of lost or delayed luggage. As Samsung expands the service to additional carriers, this approach could reshape the future of baggage management across the aviation industry.
